RESUMO

Pharmacogenomics (PGx) is a rapidly changing field of genomics in which healthcare professionals play an important role in its implementation in the clinical setting, however PGx level of adoption remains low. This study aims to investigate the attitude, self-confidence, level of knowledge, and their impact on health sciences undergraduate students' intentions to adopt PGx in clinical practice using a questionnaire developed based on the Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB). A model was proposed and a questionnaire was developed that was distributed to 467 undergraduate students of all academic years from four different departments of the University of Sharjah (UoS) including medical, dental, nursing, and pharmacy students from September 2022 to November 2022. Descriptive statistics along with factor analysis and regression analysis were conducted. The proposed model had a good internal consistency and fit. Attitude was the factor with the greatest impact on student's intentions followed by self-confidence and barriers. The level of knowledge had a meaningless impact. The majority of students shared a positive attitude and were aware of PGx benefits. Almost 60% of the respondents showed a high level of knowledge, while 50% of them were confident of implementing PGx in their clinical practice. Many students were prone to adopt PGx in their future careers. PGx testing cost and the lack of reimbursement were the most important barriers. Overall, students shared a positive intention and were prone to adopt PGx. In the future, it would be important to investigate the differences between gender, year of studies, and area of studies studies and their impact on students' intentions.

RESUMO

Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) often presents with a wide range of complications, including respiratory distress, acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS), and hypercoagulable states with resultant cerebrovascular incidents. Intra- and extra-pulmonological shunts can further complicate patient courses, leading to persistent hypoxemia and paradoxical emboli, resulting in potentially life-threatening consequences, necessitating a comprehensive, multidisciplinary approach to patient care. Here we present the case of a 73-year-old male who experienced severe persistent hypoxemic respiratory failure, superimposed methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) pneumonia, and stroke with a previously undiagnosed patent foramen ovale (PFO) contributing to his clinical presentation.

RESUMO

New phenylisoxazole quinoxalin-2-amine hybrids 5a-i were successfully synthesised with yields of 53-85% and characterised with various spectroscopy methods. The synthesised hybrids underwent in vitro α-amylase and α-glucosidase inhibitory assays, with acarbose as the positive control. Through the biological study, compound 5h exhibits the highest α-amylase inhibitory activity with IC50 = 16.4 ± 0.1 µM while compounds 5a-c, 5e and 5h exhibit great potential as α-glucosidase inhibitors, with 5c being the most potent (IC50 = 15.2 ± 0.3 µM). Among the compounds, 5h exhibits potential as a dual inhibitor for both α-amylase (IC50 = 16.4 ± 0.1 µM) and α-glucosidase (IC50 = 31.6 ± 0.4 µM) enzymes. Through the molecular docking studies, the inhibition potential of the selected compounds is supported. Compound 5h showed important interactions with α-amylase enzyme active sites and exhibited the highest binding energy of -8.9 ± 0.10 kcal mol-1, while compound 5c exhibited the highest binding energy of -9.0 ± 0.20 kcal mol-1 by forming important interactions with the α-glucosidase enzyme active sites. The molecular dynamics study showed that the selected compounds exhibited relative stability when binding with α-amylase and α-glucosidase enzymes. Additionally, compound 5h demonstrated a similar pattern of motion and mechanism of action as the commercially available miglitol.

RESUMO

Background: Glycolipid metabolism disorders (dysglycolipidemia) are characterized by elevated levels of glycolipid profile components and fasting blood glucose. Dysglycolipidemia are major threats to human health and life. Therefore, the aim of this cross-sectional study is to estimate the prevalence of dysglycolipidemia and the existence of association of TSH and T4 and glycolipid profiles. Methods: Cross-sectional data were obtained from the medical laboratory of Ma'an Governmental Hospital. A total of 141 patients' results were collected (18-60 years). Differences in the glycolipidemic profiles according to age and sex and TSH and T4 were compared. Different statistical analyses were used to analyze the prevalence of dysglycolipidemia and the correlation with the levels of TSH and T4. Results: The study involved results of 141 patients (54.7% males and 45.3% females) in Ma'an Province (Jordan), who visited the internal medicine clinic at Ma'an Governmental Hospital. Patients have overweight and BMI of more than 25 kg/m2. The overall results of the prevalence of dyslipidemia indicated that patients have 42.5% of hypercholesterolemia, 48.2% of high LDL-C, 34.1% of hypertriglyceridemia, and 41.8% of low HDL-C. The prevalence of isolated lipid profiles showed that 10 patients have mixed dyslipidemia. The association of dyslipidemia with age indicated a positive significance between triglyceride and older people (≥40 years), while HDL levels have a significance with gender (p=0.025). The overall ANOVA model yielded non-statistical significant results between levels of any components of lipid profile and levels of TSH and T4 hormones. Welch test (p=0.036) showed positive significance between levels of fasting blood glucose and triglyceride levels. Conclusions: Our results showed and confirmed the presence of a high percentage of hyperlipidemia in Ma'an province and there was no relationship with levels of TSH and T4. A relationship exists between levels of triglycerides and blood glucose concentrations.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Technology advancements have altered the standard of nursing care, and education. This suggests the necessity to equip prospective nurses to provide competent care in a highly technical and digital environment via telenursing. AIMS: The aim of this study was to assess the perceptions and knowledge of nursing students about telenursing. METHODS: Using a descriptive cross-sectional design. A self-reported questionnaire was used. The distribution of 110 questionnaires to nursing students attending two private colleges in Jordan resulted in an 83.6% (n = 92) response rate. Descriptive and inferential statistics were applied. RESULTS: The results showed a positive perception toward telenursing practice, as well as the difficulty in precisely defining telenursing. Age, internet usage patterns, and knowledge were all factors considered telenursing predictors. 32% of the variance was explained by the model. Telenursing would be beneficial for future nursing professionals by incorporating telenursing into the curriculum. CONCLUSIONS: The learning environment is extends somewhat beyond the classroom, making it is necessary to integrate telenursing into education in order to redefine the future of the nursing practice.

RESUMO

Elevated interleukin 8 (IL-8) expression has been linked to unfavorable outcomes in a range of inflammatory conditions, such as rheumatoid arthritis, psoriasis, and cancer. The human monoclonal antibody (HuMab) 10F8 and the hybridoma 35B11-B bind to an epitope on human IL-8, respectively. 10F8 inhibited interaction between IL-8 and neutrophils in eczema and pustulosis palmoplantaris patients while 35B11-B decreased size lesion in rat model. The binding interaction of monoclonal antibodies and IL-8, especially how complementarity-determining region (CDR) loops could bind the N-terminal of IL-8, has not been fully deliberated at molecular-level. Here, we used a combination of molecular docking, heated and long coarse-grained molecular dynamics simulations to identify key residues of established interaction. Based on heated MD simulation, docked pose of complexes generated by ClusPro showed good binding stability throughout of 70 ns simulation. Based on long molecular dynamic simulations, key residues for the binding were identified throughout of 1000 ns simulation. TYR-53, ASP-99, and ARG-100 of heavy chain CDR together with TYR-33 of light chain CDR are among the highest contributing energy residues within the binding interaction. Meanwhile, LYS11 and TYR13 of IL-8 are important for the determination of overall binding energy. Furthermore, the result of decomposition residues analysis is in good agreement with the interaction analysis data. Current study provides a list of important interacting residues and further scrutiny on these residues is essential for future development and design of a new and stable recombinant antibody against IL-8.Communicated by Ramaswamy H. RESUMO

In our effort to develop potent anti-hyperglycemic compounds with inhibitory activity against α-amylase and α-glucosidase, a series of novel quinoxaline-isoxazole moieties were synthesized. The novel quinoxaline-isoxazole derivatives were assessed in vitro for their anti-hyperglycemic activities on α-amylase and α-glucosidase inhibitions. The results revealed promising IC50 values compared to acarbose as a positive control for α-amylase and α-glucosidase. Among them, N-Ethyl-7-chloro-3-((3-phenylisoxazol-5-yl)methoxy)quinoxalin-2-amine 5b showed dual inhibitory with IC50 of 24.0 µM for α-amylase and 41.7 µM for α-glucosidase. In addition, N-Ethyl-7-methoxy-3-((3-(2-chlorophenyl)isoxazol-5-yl)methoxy)quinoxalin-2-amine 5j also had dual bioactivities against α-amylase and α-glucosidase with IC50 of 17.0 and 40.1 µM, respectively. Nevertheless, two more compounds N-Ethyl-7-cyano-3-((3-phenylisoxazol-5-yl)methoxy)quinoxaline-2-amine 5e showed strong mono-inhibition for α-glucosidase with IC50 of 16.6 µM followed by N-Ethyl-7-methoxy-3-((3-phenylisoxazol-5-yl)methoxy)quinoxalin-2-amine 5 f with IC50 of 18.6 µM. The molecular docking study for α-glucosidase inhibitor provided the binding energy ranging from 8.3 to 9.1 kcal/mol and α-amylase inhibitor showed the binding energy score at 8.4 and 8.5 kcal/mol. The dual inhibitions nature of 5b and 5j were further analyzed and confirmed via molecular dynamics including the stability of the compound, interaction energy, binding free energy, and the interaction residue analysis using the MM-GBSA approach. The results showed that compound 5j was the most potent compound. Lastly, the drug-likeness properties were also evaluated with all synthesized compounds 5a-5j and the results reveal that all potent compounds meet Lipinski's rules of five.

RESUMO

Osteoarthritis (OA) is a public health disease that causes decreased mobility and leads to poor quality of life. A person's health-seeking behavior can influence their understanding of a disease, which in turn can alter its course. The objectives of this study were to measure the misconceptions about osteoarthritis and to identify the associated health-seeking behaviors. An online, self-administered, questionnaire-based study was conducted with 872 Arabic-speaking participants divided into three strata, group 1 comprising of patients with OA, group 2 participants with joint pain (without OA) and group 3 comprised of general population. Multivariate logistic regression analysis found that seeking care from general practitioners [3.29 (1.19, 9.16)], taking advice from friends [2.83 (1.08, 7.42)], seeking care from chiropractors [3.67 (1.02, 13.60)] and podiatrist [4.64 (1.31, 16.51)] were significantly associated with misconceptions, whereas, the odds were lower for those using social media [0.16 (0.06, 0.46)] and expert websites [0.63 (0.40, 0.99)]. The findings of this study imply that the level of misconceptions is high amongst all three strata.. Expert websites and social media have a positive effect on the management of osteoarthritis. However, general practitioners and allied health workers should regularly update their knowledge using refresher courses.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Bisphenol A (BPA) is a rapid spreading organic pollutant that widely used in many industries especially as a plasticizer in polycarbonate plastic and epoxy resins. BPA reported as a prominent endocrine disruptor compound that possesses estrogenic activity and fulminant toxicity. Pseudomonas putida YC-AE1 was isolated in our previous study and exerted a strong degradation capacity toward BPA at high concentrations; however, the molecular degradation mechanism is still enigmatic. RESULTS: We employed RNA sequencing to analyze the differentially expressed genes (DEGs) in the YC-AE1 strain upon BPA induction. Out of 1229 differentially expressed genes, 725 genes were positively regulated, and 504 genes were down-regulated. The pathways of microbial metabolism in diverse environments were significantly enriched among DEGs based on KEGG enrichment analysis. qRT-PCR confirm the involvement of BPA degradation relevant genes in accordance with RNA Seq data. The degradation pathway of BPA in YC-AE1 was proposed with specific enzymes and encoded genes. The role of cytochrome P450 (CYP450) in BPA degradation was further verified. Sever decrease in BPA degradation was recorded by YC-AE1 in the presence of CYP450 inhibitor. Subsequently, CYP450bisdB deficient YC-AE1 strain △ bisdB lost its ability toward BPA transformation comparing with the wild type. Furthermore, Transformation of E. coli with pET-32a-bisdAB empowers it to degrade 66 mg l-1 of BPA after 24 h. Altogether, the results showed the role of CYP450 in biodegradation of BPA by YC-AE1. CONCLUSION: In this study we propose the molecular basis and the potential role of YC-AE1cytochrome P450 monooxygenase in BPA catabolism.

RESUMO

Extended-spectrum ß-lactamase Escherichia coli is an important cause of urinary tract infections in humans. ESBL producers E. coli were reported in food-producing animals, but no previous study reported the virulence potential of these isolates. Thus, this study determined the virulence potential of ESBL producers E. coli isolates from 518 beef feces, 610 dairy cow feces, 305 dairy cow milk, 503 sheep milk and 445 goat milk samples. A total of 278 isolates; specifically, 130 from beef feces, 39 from the cow's feces, 42 from cow's milk, 44 from sheep milk and 23 from goats' milk were isolated and then tested for 14 virulence genes by polymerase chain reaction. After that, the correlation of virulence genes presence among the isolates was determined statistically. Overall, 97% of the isolates carried fimH, 39% carried iroN E. coli and 32% carried papC. The kpsMT K1, cnf1, papAH, papG allele II & III, papG allele II, and kpsMT II were carried by 6 to 23% of the isolates, while less than 6% of the isolates carried papG allele III, papG allele I, Univcnf, iutA and hlyA. About 68.2% of the isolates carried two or more virulence genes and 41.8% carried three or more. Moreover, the isolates had 71 different profiles of virulence genes, where the most common profiles were fimH alone (86 isolate), fimH + iroN E. coli (35 isolate), fimH + papC (20 isolate), and fimH + papC + iroN E. coli (13 isolate). The adhesion, capsule synthesis and toxins secretion genes were significantly associated (p Ë‚ 0.01) with each other. These results call for awareness about the risk of food animals as reservoirs of ESBL uropathogenic E. coli that would threaten public health and limits the treatment options for urinary tract infections.

RESUMO

The COVID-19 pandemic has severely impacted many industries, in particular the healthcare sector exposing systemic vulnerabilities in emergency preparedness, risk mitigation, and supply chain management. A major challenge during the pandemic was related to the increased demand for Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), resulting in critical shortages for healthcare and frontline workers. This is due to the lack of information visibility combined with the inability to precisely track product movement within the supply chain, requiring a robust traceability solution. Blockchain technology is a distributed ledger that ensures a transparent, safe, and secure exchange of data among supply chain stakeholders. The advantages of adopting blockchain technology to manage and track PPE products in the supply chain include decentralized control, security, traceability, and auditable time-stamped transactions. In this paper, we present a blockchain-based approach using smart contracts to transform PPE supply chain operations. We propose a generic framework using Ethereum smart contracts and decentralized storage systems to automate the processes and information exchange and present detailed algorithms that capture the interactions among supply chain stakeholders. The smart contract code was developed and tested in Remix environment, and the code is made publicly available on Github. We present detailed cost and security analysis incurred by the stakeholders in the supply chain. Adopting a blockchain-based solution for PPE supply chains is economically viable and provides a streamlined, secure, trusted, and transparent mode of communication among various stakeholders.

RESUMO

In this present work, we aim to improve the hydrophobicity of a polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) surface. Various heights of 3D PDMS micropillars were fabricated via grayscale photolithography, and improved wettability was investigated. Two approaches of PDMS replication were demonstrated, both using a single master mold to obtain the micropillar arrays. The different heights of fabricated PDMS micropillars were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and a surface profiler. The surface hydrophobicity was characterized by measuring the water contact angles. The fabrication of PDMS micropillar arrays was shown to be effective in modifying the contact angles of pure water droplets with the highest 157.3-degree water contact angle achieved by implementing a single mask grayscale lithography technique.

RESUMO

Diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA) is one of the most common causes of morbidity and mortality in patients with type 1 DM. Due to severe acidosis, ketonemia and electrolyte disturbances it can lead to various complications in the body, which can be fatal in some cases. Neurological complications related to DKA include cerebral edema, cerebral infarction, brain herniation, cortical venous thrombosis. It is very rare for DKA to cause subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH). We present a case 19-year-old female with severe DKA, who developed SAH without any pre-existing aneurysm or other common risk factors. The patient did not have any neurologic deficits and was managed conservatively with the resolution of her symptoms. We have also summarized the existing literature regarding the association of DKA with subarachnoid hemorrhage.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: Visceral artery pseudoaneurysms (VAPAs) are uncommon in clinical practice but may have serious clinical outcomes up to death. Endovascular management is a safe effective alternative option to traditional surgical procedures. This study assesses the outcome of different embolic materials and techniques used in the endovascular management of VAPAs. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This is a two-center retrospective analysis of endovascular embolisation of 46 VAPAs, with a mean pseudoaneurysm size of 13 ± 11.35 mm, that were urgently managed between July 2018 and March 2020. Patients' presentations were GIT hemorrhage, intrabdominal hemorrhage, hematuria, and abdominal pain in 34.78%, 30.43%, 23.91%, and 10.87% respectively. Management using coils only was done in 28/46 patients (60.87%), NBCA glue only in 16/46 patients (34.78%), combined coils and NBCA glue in 1/46 patient (2.17%), and Amplatzer plugs only in 1 patient (2.17%). The management techniques were sac packing in 9/46 patients (19.57%), inflow occlusion in 28/46 patients (60.87%) and trapping in 9/46 patients (19.57%). All patients were followed-up for 1 year after the procedure. RESULTS: The overall clinical success and periprocedural complication rates were 93.48%, and 15.22% respectively, and 30-day mortality was zero. Clinical success was 92.86% in the coil subgroup (n = 28), and 93.75% in the NBCA glue subgroup (n = 16). The technical success rate was 100%. Effectiveness of the procedures during the follow-up was 97.83%. Target lesion re-intervention rate was 2.17%. CONCLUSION: Transarterial embolisation can provide high technical and clinical success rates with low periprocedural complication and re-intervention rates, as well as satisfactory procedure effectiveness in the management of VAPAs.

RESUMO

The unique properties and advantages of edible films over conventional food packaging have led the way to their extensive exploration in recent years. Moreover, the incorporation of bioactive components during their production has further enhanced the intrinsic features of packaging materials. This study was aimed to develop edible and bioactive food packaging films comprising yeast incorporated into bacterial cellulose (BC) in conjunction with carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) and glycerol (Gly) to extend the shelf life of packaged food materials. First, yeast biomass and BC hydrogels were produced by Meyerozyma guilliermondii (MT502203.1) and Gluconacetobacter xylinus (ATCC53582), respectively, and then the films were developed ex situ by mixing 30 wt.% CMC, 30 wt.% Gly, 2 wt.% yeast dry biomass, and 2 wt.% BC slurry. FE-SEM observation showed the successful incorporation of Gly and yeast into the fibrous cellulose matrix. FTIR spectroscopy confirmed the development of composite films through chemical interaction between BC, CMC, Gly, and yeast. The developed BC/CMC/Gly/yeast composite films showed high water solubility (42.86%). The yeast-incorporated films showed antimicrobial activities against three microbial strains, including Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and Saccharomyces aureus, by producing clear inhibition zones of 16 mm, 10 mm, and 15 mm, respectively, after 24 h. Moreover, the films were non-toxic against NIH-3T3 fibroblast cells. Finally, the coating of oranges and tomatoes with BC/CMC/Gly/yeast composites enhanced the shelf life at different storage temperatures. The BC/CMC/Gly/yeast composite film-coated oranges and tomatoes demonstrated acceptable sensory features such as odor and color, not only at 6 °C but also at room temperature and further elevated temperatures at 30 °C and 40 °C for up to two weeks. The findings of this study indicate that the developed BC/CMC/Gly/yeast composite films could be used as edible packaging material with high nutritional value and distinctive properties related to the film component, which would provide protection to foods and extend their shelf life, and thus could find applications in the food industry.

RESUMO

Bacterial-derived extracellular vesicles could play a major role in attenuating and treating diseases. They play a major anti-infection role by modulating immune responses against pathogens and preventing infection by inhibiting pathogen localization and proliferation. In this study, outer membrane vesicles (ExHp-CD) released by Helicobacter pylori SS1 (H. pylori) and total antigens isolated from H. pylori SS1 (AgHp) were evaluated for their immunogenic potential and their effect on macrophage RAW 264.7 cells. Results demonstrated that both ExHp-CD and AgHp induced T helper 2 (Th2) immune response, which was reported to be important in immune protection against H. pylori infections. Both ExHp-CD and AgHp produced high levels of IL-10 and IL-4, while no significant levels of IL-12 p70 or IFN-γ were detected. However, ExHp-CD showed a better effect on macrophage RAW 264.7 cells compared to AgHp. Macrophage RAW 264.7 cells stimulated with 5, and 10 µg/mL of ExHp-CD showed an increased ratio of CD206 (M2 phenotype marker) and a decreased ratio of CD86 (M1 phenotype marker). Moreover, results suggested that the immunogenic effect that ExHp-CD possesses was attributed to their cargo of Epimerase_2 domain-containing protein (Epi_2D), Probable malate:quinone oxidoreductase (Pro_mqo), and Probable cytosol aminopeptidase (Pro_ca). Results demonstrated that ExHp-CD possesses an immunological activity to induce Th2 immune response against H. pylori infection with results comparable to AgHp. However, ExHp-CD showed higher efficacy regarding safety, biocompatibility, lack of toxicity, and hemocompatibility. Thus, it could serve as an immunogenic candidate with more desired characteristics.

RESUMO

A total of fourteen pyrazoline derivatives were synthesized through cyclo-condensation reactions by chalcone derivatives with different types of semicarbazide. These compounds were characterized by IR, 1D-NMR (1H, 13C and Distortionless Enhancement by Polarization Transfer - DEPT-135) and 2D-NMR (COSY, HSQC and HMBC) as well as mass spectroscopy analysis (HRMS). The synthesized compounds were tested for their antituberculosis activity against Mycobacterium tuberculosis H37Ra in vitro. Based on this activity, compound 4a showed the most potent inhibitory activity, with a minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) value of 17 µM. In addition, six other synthesized compounds, 5a and 5c-5g, exhibited moderate activity, with MIC ranges between 60 µM to 140 µM. Compound 4a showed good bactericidal activity with a minimum bactericidal concentration (MBC) value of 34 µM against Mycobacterium tuberculosis H37Ra. Molecular docking studies for compound 4a on alpha-sterol demethylase was done to understand and explore ligand-receptor interactions, and to hypothesize potential refinements for the compound.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: A new Bayesian penalized likelihood reconstruction algorithm for positron emission tomography (PET) (Q.Clear) is now in clinical use for fludeoxyglucose (FDG) PET/CT. However, experience with non-FDG tracers and in special patient populations is limited. This pilot study aims to compare Q.Clear to standard PET reconstructions for 18F sodium fluoride (18F-NaF) PET in obese patients. METHODS: 30 whole body 18F-NaF PET/CT scans (10 patients with BMI 30-40 Kg/m2 and 20 patients with BMI >40 Kg/m2) and a NEMA image quality phantom scans were analyzed using ordered subset expectation maximization (OSEM) and Q.Clear reconstructions methods with B400, 600, 800 and 1000. The images were assessed for overall image quality (IQ), noise level, background soft tissue, and lesion detectability, contrast recovery (CR), background variability (BV) and contrast-to-noise ratio (CNR) for both algorithms. RESULTS: CNR for clinical cases was higher for Q.Clear than OSEM (p < 0.05). Mean CNR for OSEM was (21.62 ± 8.9), and for Q.Clear B400 (31.82 ± 14.6), B600 (35.54 ± 14.9), B800 (39.81 ± 16.1), and B1000 (40.9 ± 17.8). As the ß value increased the CNR increased in all clinical cases. B600 was the preferred ß value for reconstruction in obese patients. The phantom study showed Q.Clear reconstructions gave lower CR and lower BV than OSEM. The CNR for all spheres was significantly higher for Q.Clear (independent of ß) than OSEM (p < 0.05), suggesting superiority of Q.Clear. CONCLUSION: This pilot clinical study shows that Q.Clear reconstruction algorithm improves overall IQ of 18F-NaF PET in obese patients. Our clinical and phantom measurement results demonstrate improved CNR and reduced BV when using Q.Clear. A ß value of 600 is preferred for reconstructing 18F-NaF PET/CT with Q.Clear in obese patients. ADVANCES IN KNOWLEDGE: 18F-NaF PET/CT is less susceptible to artifacts induced by body habitus. Bayesian penalized likelihood reconstruction with18F-NaF PET improves overall IQ in obese patients.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: High numbers of violence incidents against physicians are reported annually in both developing and developed countries. In Jordan, studies conducted on healthcare workers involved small number of physicians and showed higher percentages of violence exposure when compared to other investigations from the Middle East. This is a large study aiming to comprehensively analyze the phenomenon in the physicians' community to optimize future strategies countering it. METHODS: The study has a cross sectional, questionnaire-based design. It targeted 969 doctors from different types of healthcare Jordanian institutions in Amman, between May to July, 2019. The questionnaire was designed to evaluate properties of reported abuse cases in terms of abusers, timing, and type of abuse, in addition to the consequences of this abuse. RESULTS: Prevalence of exposure to violence in the last year among doctors was 63.1% (611 doctors). 423 (67.2%) of male doctors had an experience of being abused during the last 12 months, compared to 188 (55.3%) of females (p< 0.001). Governmental centers showed the highest prevalence. Among 356 doctors working in governmental medical centers, 268 (75.3%) reported being abused (p< 0.001), and they were more abused verbally (63.5%) and physically (10.4%) compared to other medical sectors (p <0.001). The mean score of how worried doctors are regarding violence at their workplace from 1 to 5 was 3.1 ± 1.3, and only 129 (13.3%) believed that they are protected by law. CONCLUSIONS: The study emphasized on the higher rate of violence against physicians in the governmental sector, in addition to the negative effect of abuse on their performance. Moreover, male physicians had higher incidence of workplace abuse. Therefore, strategies that ease and promote the real application of anti-violence policies should become our future target.
